A workplace is rarely a collection of completely sane people. My fellow employees and I don’t just bring photos of our family and pets to work with us–we also bring our pain, problems, and defects of character. So it’s only a matter of time before someone does something to make me furious.
Sometimes those feelings can grow intense and even explosive. Today, if that happens, I will remove myself from the situation. If I can, I will write a mini Fourth Step, focusing on the question: “This affects what?” What in my life is endangered by someone else’s behavior? My self-esteem? My job security?
I will acknowledge what I’m afraid of losing and treat that fear with compassion. As the initial feelings fade, I will ask my Higher Power for help with the situation, knowing that I’m better able to listen for guidance and choose a response.
