For some people in recovery, career success — the kind that makes a good post on social media — follows as they work the Steps. But that doesn’t happen for everyone. At least not right away.
Most of us see rewards as we practice the principles of recovery at work; our bosses notice our patient competence and our newfound ability to interact productively with other people. We’re rewarded … but not always with the kind of accolades we think we’re supposed to have.
Today, if I’m feeling disappointed about where I’ve ended up, I will call a friend to ask for help inventorying my expectations. Is it okay to be ordinary? Or do I need to be exceptional to be acceptable? Today I will open myself up to the possibility that I have what I need today and can be loved as I am today, no matter my title or position.
