“We became addicted to excitement.”
Many of us got used to chaos and drama. It was what we knew; it made us feel alive and lit up our brains. When we strive for a sober life — chemically or emotionally — we know we have to give up the drama. But like any other addiction, we can usually manage it only one day at a time.
Today, if workplace drama presents itself, or if I find myself creating it without realizing it, I will look for saner ways to feel connected. I’ll call or text a friend. I’ll try a quick affirmation or meditation and say a prayer for the removal of my need to stir the pot. And I’ll remember that I may want the drama now, but I won’t want the hangover later.
